Date of Separation
The date of separation is the day you and your partner decided the relationship was over. Almost every clause in your separation agreement refers back to it.
Property values are calculated as of the separation date. Support clocks start ticking from it. Tax filings may need to reflect it. If you said the words and one of you moved out, that is your date. If you said the words but kept living together "as roommates" while figuring things out, the date is usually the date of the conversation — as long as you actually stopped functioning as a couple (separate bedrooms, separate finances, no socializing together). Pick the day that feels most accurate. The other party needs to agree to it too.
